Ingredients

  • 1 kg minced meat (beef or lamb)
  • 1 large onion, finely chopped
  • 5 garlic cloves, minced
  • 3 tomatoes, chopped
  • 3 potatoes, cut into wedges
  • 1 zucchini, sliced
  • 1 bell pepper, sliced
  • 1 hot pepper (optional)
  • 5 bay leaves
  • 4 cinnamon sticks
  • Fresh coriander, chopped
  • ½ cup olive oil
  • ½ cup harissa or hot sauce (daqous)
  • Juice of 1 lemon
  • Salt and mixed spices to taste

Instructions

  1. Prepare the vegetables: Cut potatoes into wedges, slice zucchini and peppers, and chop tomatoes and onion.
  2. Season the minced meat with salt, spices, garlic, and some chopped onion. Form into medium-sized meatballs.
  3. In a large tagine or pot, heat olive oil. Arrange a layer of potato wedges at the bottom, then add the meatballs.
  4. Add the remaining vegetables (zucchini, peppers, tomatoes) on top of the meatballs.
  5. Pour in harissa, lemon juice, bay leaves, cinnamon sticks, and enough water to partially cover the ingredients. Sprinkle with fresh coriander.
  6. Cover and cook on medium-low heat for 40-45 minutes until the meatballs are cooked through and the vegetables are tender. Stir gently occasionally.
  7. Serve hot with fresh bread or rice.
